Samsung Pay finally comes to the Gear S2 in a public beta
amsung has been promising that
its Gear S2 would support Samsung Pay ever since it announced the
smartwatch (and its variations) in 2015. Now, almost a year later, the
company finally appears to be rolling out the NFC payment functionality.
Droid-Lifespotted an update to the Samsung Gear app that takes Samsung Pay out of its closed beta into a public one. So if you own a Gear S2 — Bluetooth-only, not the 3G version — you can now try using Samsung Pay yourself.
To
activate the beta, you have to update the watch’s software as well as
the Samsung Gear app. Once that’s done you just tap the "Samsung Pay
Beta" option in the updated Gear app to get started. You’ll apparently
have to add cards one by one even if you already have Samsung Pay set up
on your smartphone, which is a bit annoying, but at least the option is
finally rolling out.

Jail Health Worker Allegedly Traded Chicken, Candy for Sex
Female inmates at New York’s
Riker’s Island Correctional Facility are suing a health clinic worker
who they claim traded favors for sex, according to a lawsuit filed in
federal court. Because inmates are legally unable to consent to sex with
those who have control over them in jail, physician’s assistant Sidney Wilson is being accused of rape.
Three women, identified as “K.A.,” “S.A.,” and “L.R.,” are
suing Wilson, the City of New York, and Wilson’s employer, Corizon
Health Care, on behalf of themselves and 25 other potential victims.
They allege that they “were repeatedly raped, sexually assaulted and
abused, and forced to undergo unnecessary internal pelvic examinations”
by Wilson while they were incarcerated spanning periods between 2013 and
2015.
Wilson allegedly told
each of the women that they were special to him and that he loved them,
and that he would continue to be with them after their release, without
the other women knowing they were all being told the same thing. The
lawsuit says that he gave them favors, including providing them
with Popeye’s chicken, cigarettes, candy, gum, headphones, and payments
that he made to them through his family members. The complaint also
states that Wilson coached K.A. on what to say to a neurologist to get
prescription drugs that she could then sell or trade with fellow
inmates.
According to court
documents, K.A. told corrections officers that a physician’s assistant
was abusing her, without mentioning Wilson’s name, because he threatened
her so she wouldn’t “betray” him. The lawsuit says that one officer
told K.A. that trading sex for contraband was a fair exchange.
Allegedly, none of the officers K.A. spoke to about the abuse reported
it to their supervisors.
The
women claimed that they reported Wilson to the Department of Corrections
and health staff at the time, but no investigation was ever conducted.
They also said that after they were released from Riker’s, they reported
Wilson to the state’s Department of Corrections and Community
Supervision’s Office of Special Investigations. They said that the
matter was sent to the Inspector General’s Office for the city’s
Department of Corrections, but that Wilson was never prosecuted or
disciplined. Mayor Bill DiBlasio announced in June 2015 that he was not renewing Corizon’s contract with the city.
Court records do not indicate if Wilson has retained an attorney yet. A report in The Intercept
from September said that Wilson denied the allegations, saying, “I do
not do any kind of exam — especially pelvic exam where I have to touch
them in the private part — without a female chaperone there.” He
speculated that the accusations could have been retaliation for him not
prescribing them drugs.
The
same report included a statement from a Corizon spokesperson, who said,
“It goes without saying that substantiated cases of sexual assault and
abuse of inmates are inexcusable and punishable by termination and
reporting to law enforcement.” According to The Intercept, as of September 2015, Wilson was still employed by Corizon, but not working with patients.
The 3 Most Affordable Ways to Dramatically Update Your Home With Decor
The 3 Most Affordable Ways to Dramatically Update Your Home With Decor
When Sutton Foster, Tony Award-winning actress, star of the hit show Younger, and a recent cast addition to the Gilmore Girls revival, wanted to refresh her apartment, she turned to the mecca of stylish, affordable decor: HomeGoods.
The state of Sutton's apartment was cheerful but in need of some
refinement. "Our decor in this apartment was inspired by the view — we
have this incredible view of the Hudson with big, sweeping windows that
let in a lot of light. Because the apartment is so bright, my husband
and I felt like it could handle a lot of color — and we love color!"
Sutton said.
Mike Harrison,
artist, designer, and Broadway's beloved dressing room decorator,
stepped in to help Sutton pick and style the perfect pieces. "Simply
swapping out key pieces in your decor can create a huge transformation.
You just have to be smart on what changes will give you the biggest bang
for your buck," Mike told us.
Check out Mike's top three ways to make a dramatic design change with
affordable decor, and then see how he applied them to Sutton's
apartment.
1. Focus on accessories that support the mood and color story rather than the furniture.
He explained, "For example, a neutral sofa takes on a new life when
you swap out the monochromatic pillows and infuse a pop of color and
different textures with a new throw pillow or two — HomeGoods has tons
of stylish options that are much more affordable if you're watching your
budget!"
2. Use lighting to affect on the overall feeling of a room.
"Don't focus on the side table, but rather swap out the lamp that
sits on the table," Mike said. "If you want a warmer space, then you
could even just swap out the shade. You would be surprised how even
changing the lampshade to a darker or lighter color can transform the
vibe of your space."
3. Rearrange a bookshelf in your space.
Mike said this is one of his favorite transformations in part because
it costs nothing to do and makes a big impact. To do it, he advised,
"Add in some personal treasures and objects that make the space feel
more like you. Just moving around your pre-existing pieces and creating
new vignettes of books and objects can shift the way you look at that
shelf and add some life to a stale scene. Who doesn't love a free upgrade?!"
Five ways to delete yourself from the internet
Finally
ready to get off the grid? It's not quite as simple as it should be,
but here are a few easy-to-follow steps that will at the very least
point you in the right direction.
If you're reading this, it's highly likely that your personal
information is available to the public. And while you can never remove
yourself completely from the internet, there are ways to minimize your
online footprint. Here are five ways to do so.
Be warned however;
removing your information from the internet as I've laid it out below,
may adversely affect your ability to communicate with potential
employers.
1. Delete or deactivate your shopping, social network, and Web service accounts
Think
about which social networks you have profiles on. Aside from the big
ones, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram, do you still
have public accounts on sites like Tumblr, Google+ or even MySpace?
Which shopping sites have you registered on? Common ones might include
information stored on Amazon, Gap.com, Macys.com and others.
To
get rid of these accounts, go to your account settings and just look
for an option to either deactivate, remove or close your account.
Depending on the account, you may find it under Security or Privacy, or
something similar.
If you're having trouble with a particular
account, try searching online for "How to delete," followed by the name
of the account you wish to delete. You should be able to find some
instruction on how to delete that particular account.
If for some
reason you can't delete an account, change the info in the account to
something other than your actual info. Something fake or completely
random.
2. Remove yourself from data collection sites
There
are companies out there that collect your information. They're called
data brokers and they have names like Spokeo, Crunchbase, PeopleFinder,
as well as plenty of others. They collect data from everything you do
online and then sell that data to interested parties, mostly in order
more specifically advertise to you and sell you more stuff.
Now
you could search for yourself on these sites and then deal with each
site individually to get your name removed. Problem is, the procedure
for opting out from each site is different and sometimes involves
sending faxes and filling out actual physical paperwork. Physical.
Paperwork. What year is this, again?
Anyway, an easier way to do it is to use a service like DeleteMe at Abine.com.
For about $130 for a one-year membership, the service will jump through
all those monotonous hoops for you. It'll even check back every few
months to make sure your name hasn't been re-added to these sites.
3. Remove your info directly from websites
First,
check with your phone company or cell provider to make sure you aren't
listed online and have them remove your name if you are.
If you
want to remove an old forum post or an old embarrassing blog you wrote
back in the day, you'll have to contact the webmaster of those sites
individually. You can either look at the About us or Contacts section of
the site to find the right person to contact or go to www.whois.com and search for the domain name you wish to contact. There you should find information on who exactly to contact.
Unfortunately,
private website operators are under no obligation to remove your posts.
So, when contacting these sites be polite and clearly state why you
want the post removed. Hopefully they'll actually follow through and
remove them.
If they don't, tip number four is a less effective, but still viable, option.
4. Delete search engine results that return information about you
Search engine results includes sites like Bing, Yahoo and Google. In fact Google has a URL removal tool that can help you delete specific URLs.
For
example, if someone has posted sensitive information such as a Social
Security number or a bank account number and the webmaster of the site
where it was posted won't remove it, you can at least contact the search
engine companies to have it removed from search results, making it
harder to find.
5. And finally, the last step you'll want to take is to remove your email accounts
Depending on the type of email account you have, the amount of steps this will take will vary.
You'll
have to sign into your account and then find the option to delete or
close the account. Some accounts will stay open for a certain amount of
time, so if you want to reactivate them you can.
An email address is necessary to complete the previous steps, so make sure this one is your last.
One last thing...
Remember
to be patient when going through this process. Don't expect it to be
completed in one day. And you may also have to accept that there some
things you won't be able permanently delete from the internet. Editors' note: This article was originally published in December 2014. It has been updated with only a few minor tweaks.
